Philippa joined Mathys & Squire in 2001, qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2005, and became a Partner of the firm in 2010. She holds a first class master’s degree in natural sciences and specialises in the fields of molecular biology, biopharma, and biotechnology. Recommended in the 2025 edition of The Legal 500, she is described as “a pleasure to work with”, and commended for being “extremely responsive and comprehensive in her analysis and communication of IP strategy” (2022). Expertise
Philippa has a substantial prosecution practice before the European Patent Office (EPO), and she is responsible for the coordination and strategic management of complex worldwide patent portfolios covering commercially significant products. Philippa is also highly experienced in the conduct of offensive and defensive opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO. Other aspects of her practice include drafting, freedom to operate, and opinion work.
Philippa has particular expertise in handling inventions relating to antibodies and immunology, including immunotoxin-based therapeutics; synthetic biology, gene editing, cloning, and sequencing; nucleic acid-based therapies and delivery technologies; recombinant protein production and formulation; cardiac biology and diagnostics; tissue regeneration; and vaccines. She acts for a diverse range of clients, including international biopharma and bioscience companies, SMEs, public sector organisations, and universities.
Academic
Philippa studied at Cambridge University, obtaining a first class master’s degree in natural sciences (zoology), and also holds a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from the University of London.
